On the 29th November, schools from across Sheffield took part in the Final of the Make Your Mark 2 Challenge, launched during Global Entrepreneurship Week earlier in the month. Run by Sheffield‘s School Enterprise Champions, the top 5 teams presented their business ideas to the lively event hosted again this year by Barclays Bank in Sheffield City Centre. Scooping top prize on the day was ‘OlympiTechs’ from Fir Vale School in Sheffield, whose idea for a new retail ‘Apps’ outlet and Sports Mentor ‘app’ was delivered with a polished performance. Environ from High Storrs were in runners up spot with their innovative design of an internal generator model for a town centre Leisure space.

Fir Vale School Expands

dscn03698th November saw excited students seek out the new classrooms and spaces as we moved in to occupy the new school extension. The additional space ensures that Fir Vale has the capacity for the increase in school places for Year 7 students each year until the school is full in the year 2015.

The architectural design work for the external elevations of the extension have continued to the internal aspects where there is a striking and refreshing colour scheme. The new rooms feature some of the latest design features for schools that include many 'environmentally friendly' building management systems and security features. These include:

  • outside2

  • Moveable walls to create larger spaces for group learning activities.
  • Efficient heating and lighting systems responding to the use of the building, incorporating under-floor heating and energy efficient lighting units.
  • Advanced ventilation systems with the ability to ensure a supply of fresh air.
  • Some of the latest technology in terms of the ICT provision.
